Famous people that studied sciences and mathematics II

In this time, let us see some politicians related with science during their life:
Corazón Aquino was a mathematician and first woman in being president of her country, Philipines.

Changing the geometry of the world

Only some human beings have changed the geometry of their known world.

On October 12, the World remembers Columbus’ discovering of American continent. I am referring not to the country but to the complete continent named America some years later its discovery (the American continent from Argentina in the South to Canada in the North).

The imminent change of the time.

It has been a year since the snow came.

Those little star-shaped fractals that fall in your hand and disappear being fairly visible to your eyes. The obsession for the work, the dead lines and the surprises that change the way of your life as inelastic collisions in a pool game. How much momentum is left in that white ball?

The Little Prince and the Infinite

Recently I met with the Little Prince of Saint-Exupéry.
He is just as described by the writer, his disordered hair seems as made of wheat fields and his smile is charming.
But the writer was a little scarce in the description of his character.
You can not tolerate him!
He is insistent until death... maybe as several children that I know.
Once he asks one question, he expects the best answer.

This was my situation the day when I saw him.
I was in a 2 hours cue to ascend to the Eiffel Tower plus 2 hours cue to wait for the elevator to go to the half of the tower. I did not want to continue and preferred to see Paris during an hour among hundreds of crazy people, cameras and flashes. Then, I waited other 2 hours cue to the elevator that took me down… I felt that I was waited an infinite time until then.

Famous people that studied sciences and mathematics I

Some uncommon people not necessarily associated with science were actually interested in science subjects during their life. Some of them even obtained master degrees and PhDs. Moreover some of them work in science and art as parallel activities!

Let us see some examples:

Do you remember Winnie from The Wonderful Years series? She was played by the actress Danica McKellar who is also a mathematician who besides participating in TV series, also gives talks and writes books about mathematics.

The first polyhedron in soccer football

The history of the Soccer World Cups began in 1930 when the first World Cup was carried out in Uruguay, host country and first champion. The rules of this sport were established in England at the end of the XIX century. Since then, the ball was made of leather clusters joined by hand.

The form of the traditional ball changed at the beginning of the 70s when a new geometric model revolutionized the history of this sport.

Bécquer, Newton and Duncan Dhu

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer was the last romantic poet of the XIX century. One of his poems says:

In the dark angle of the room
and perhaps forgotten by the owner,
silent and covered with powder,
the harp was resting there.

How many notes were sleeping in the strings
as the bird sleeps in the branch!
Notes waiting for the white hand
that knows how to extract them from the harp.

Oh! I thought. How many times the genius
sleeps in this way, in the bottom of the soul?
waiting for a voice that says: Lazarus wait,
Get up and walk!
